WE ARE IN FOCUS
In Focus have been set up to provide the South of England with much needed extra-curricular arts-based learning to at-risk and vulnerable young people. We work with local authorities to implement projects that support, amongst other things, crime prevention, restorative justice, youth diversion and pro-social behaviour models. We also have the ability to deliver sessions to all ages and abilities.
We work with local authorities in the South including; Southampton Youth Offending Services (SYOS) delivering a weekly arts programme that has Arts Award embedded for the last 8 years and supporting their Artsmark journey.
We also work with Hampshire Youth Offending Service (HYOS) and Hampshire Cultural Trust (HCT) to deliver Spring and Summer arts colleges for the last 10 years. We have also worked with HCT and Hampshire CAMHS to deliver multiple programmes with the young people they work with. Other projects have included young people in care, young carers, young LGBTQ+ and those not in education employment or training.
Our team consists of highly skilled artist educators (with a combined experience of over 30 years), all of whom are trained Arts Award Advisors at all levels and some with formal teaching qualifications. All of our team also have their own professional artistic practice.
All of the Youth Offending Services are either on or starting their Artsmark journey and have a large body of their team who are trained in the delivery of Arts Award across all levels. The support of the YOT are fundamental to all the programmes we manage, they help with the smooth running of each session and give the young people a safe environment to learn.
Our Work with Youth Offending Services Across Hampshire.
For the past eight years members of In Focus have provided Southampton Youth Offending Services (SYOS) with a weekly arts programme that has seen upwards of 40 young offenders and at risk young people achieve at least one Arts Award, we helped them get their first Artsmark Award and most recently we have gone on to help them achieve the first Gold Artsmark Award for a youth justice setting. Young people known to SYOS and other at risk young people have completed a number of arts based activities and ultimately achieve at least a Bronze Arts Award, a recognised qualification from Trinity College London.
We have also worked with Hampshire Youth Offending Service (HYOS) – having been sub-contracted by Hampshire Cultural Trust (HCT) – to deliver Spring and Summer arts colleges (for the last 10 years) for them working with YPs that have been referred by HYOS.
We have also worked with HCT and Hampshire Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) to deliver programmes with the young people they work with (many of whom are also known to YOS).
In Focus provide on-going and enhanced delivery of their weekly programme with the SYOS that suite the individual needs of the setting. We have extended our reach to the neighbouring Youth Offending Services (Portsmouth, Isle of Wight and Hampshire) to create a pan-YOS provision and support any direction in which they are currently looking to move forward – supporting them on their Artsmark Award journey as part of the process. We have increased the number of contact hours with young people and look to engage more of them through arts and culture. We also support the YOS staff through CPD to give them more confidence to deliver work in this way through Arts Award Advisor training and ongoing CPD during sessions. This enables the programme’s staff to gain more valuable experience and develop, thus ensuring legacy for the work. We have already worked with Restorative Justice (RJ) staff which they have taken on to use with their young people and we want to see this become more widely spread as staff skills develop alongside the young people.
We have a unique and strong connection with not just Southampton Youth Offending Service, but all of the Youth Offending Teams across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. All of which have indicated that a project of this nature would be high beneficial to their offering.
