Admin & Comms Assistant - (Breakthrough Programme Placement)

During my first week at In Focus, I experienced 2 different types of meetings. I had never really experienced meetings and having in person guest speakers to discuss their organisation in a workplace. I wasn’t sure what to expect, especially since I am still learning about my role and the organisation, but it was an insightful and interesting
experience.
In the morning, I was involved in my first Team Meeting with In Focus. I made notes throughout the meeting of different ideas and key information based on the agenda of the meeting. It was interesting to see how meetings are run and structured and I felt comfortable to ask questions, volunteering to help, taking on responsibilities and give ideas when I could.
It was amazing to see everyone participating, willing to volunteer and asking questions or for further explanation. It was great to see different perspectives and points of view from the team. And learning more about In Focus and their values as an organisation and as individuals.
Later in the day, I attended the Youth Leadership Group meeting, with guest speaker Dan Crow from A Space Arts. Again, I wasn’t sure what to expect as I had never experienced in person guest speakers in a workplace and I’m still learning the role. But it was interesting to learn about the meeting: what it was, what it was about, and hearing Dan speak so passionately about the Arts and Creative Industry was really inspiring. It was great to see everyone participating. People were willing to volunteer and ask questions, interesting and thought-provoking questions. It was great to see everyone’s points of view and perspectives.
Through both meetings, I learned so much about the organisation, the values, the team, the structures of meetings; it was a safe place to confidently voice your thoughts and ideas. It also gave the opportunity for everyone to consider and reflect on other’s perspectives and ideas. The Youth Leadership Group meetings create an opportunity for young people to learn new skills, talk about what they are interested in and what they want to learn- from key work skills from different creative perspectives to practical creative experience. And just giving them space to use their unique voice and talk about their creative passions.
I found it inspiring that In Focus, as an organisation, use their own time to create and schedule these meetings. They are strong believers in Youth Leadership and giving them the opportunity to learn, discuss and make positive creative change for everyone.
