In Focus recently delivered a zine-making workshop for New Forest Breakout Youth as part of the Pride in the Shirt initiative, a project focused on supporting LGBTQAI+ inclusion in football and sport. Led by CEO Kristianne, the session used hands-on creativity to help young people explore identity, self-expression and community through zines.
The workshop introduced the group to the basics of zine-making — from simple folding techniques to exploring what their content could include — all while having some fun inventing a brand-new sport. After looking at a variety of zine examples, participants folded a custom-made zine created especially for the session, which shared a brief history of zine culture. This helped warm everyone up for creating their own.
We then spent an hour making zines using pens, pencils, maps, and scrap paper to dream up our own imaginary sports. Ideas ranged from ladling onions to racing fireworks (very topical!) to tossing Usagi and hole hopping.
Workshops like this are part of In Focus’s commitment to providing inclusive creative opportunities for young people across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. To learn more about our programmes, upcoming sessions or how to get involved, visit our what’s on section or follow us on social media.
