In Focus have just finished running a six-week course on how to elevate and improve your smartphone photography!
The workshops were held by SO18 Big Local over the course of six 2-hour sessions on Wednesday evenings, and covered everything from an introduction to using your smartphone for photography in general, to how to compose a portrait, how to creatively use lighting, low-light photography, long exposures, product photography and loads more topics.
The group were introduced to core concepts such as shutter speed, aperture, ISO and composition as well as being given weekly challenges such as working with lights, framing things in a creative way and using colour and black & white in unusual ways.
Each session was accompanied by a mobile printing process using small canon instant printers, so participants could view their work printed immediately after taking each photo. This allowed for some excellent group critique and discussion of results as well as enabling everyone to take home their favourite images as postcard sized prints every week!
The workshops were a huge success, with many participants saying that it’s totally changed the way they use their smartphones; evidenced by the dramatic results produced by the end of the course.
The course will be accompanied by both an exhibition of the work displayed in the SO18 Big local space on Melchet road, and a companion book detailing the details of the workshop, the best results produced during sessions and information on SO18 Big Local and the surrounding area; also produced by In Focus as part of the workshop process.
Both the book and exhibition will be coming in early 2023, so keep a lookout on our social media for information in the coming months!
Although the project was written and delivered by our Community Projects Coordinator Benjamin, we are aiming to run this workshop again for other groups in the near future, so look out for info on that too!
